20% Project – Week 3

This was a very productive week for my 20% project, as I finished this weeks work as well as some of next weeks. I was able to create the outline for my second software, and finish the code that makes the round robin, which is a structure of games that pairs each team against one another. This week was very productive, but I still had some problems. When I started, I had some problems with the coding software I used needing to be updated. However, I was able to get it working after only about five minutes. I had to adjust and work faster to make up for lost time, but while the software was updating, I was able to plan out exactly what I was going to do later for that day. Overall, I finished a ton this week, and I think that next week I will be able to start putting everything together.

The Best Room in the House

My favorite room in my home is the living room. The living room is my favorite room in my house because it is where I can relax, play video games, and hang out with my family. The living room is the biggest room in my house, so it can comfortably fit the couch, piano, bookshelves and T.V. The living room is the perfect place to relax as the multiple windows allow for nice breezes and plenty of natural light, and the multitude of bookshelves allows for almost endless reading. Because the living room has the T.V., it is the place where I play on my switch and watch T.V. Finally, because the living room is the biggest room in the house, you can usually find my brother or dad lounging around, and due to the copious supply of card games, I can have fun with them for hours on end.

20% Project – Week 2

This week was the second week in my 20% project. I accomplished a lot this week. On Friday I forgot my laptop, so I spent the day doing research and practicing coding online. I spent the weekend making up the time I lost on Friday, and made many codes, including the template for the final scheduler and a code that takes the information from the scheduler and puts it into an excel sheet. These are very important parts of my final code, and will lay the foundation for the next couple of weeks. I had many struggles this week, as I forgot my laptop at my house, but the work I did over the weekend made up for it. Obviously, I had to adjust my schedule to include the time for weekend work, but it ended up working out in the end. Next week I will start working on the round robin scheduling system, which takes an input of teams and pairs each one against another. I expect this to take two weeks, as it is fairly complicated, but I am still on track to finishing within my deadline.

Cookies or Brownies?

Which is better, Cookies or Brownies. This question has stumped me and my family for years, and today I am here to finally settle the debate about which baked dessert item is the best. First and foremost, I am going to be talking about the classic, chocolate-chip cookie, and normal chocolate brownie. From a texture standpoint, I think that brownies are better. When they are baked just right, the soft, mushy consistency is nothing short of heavenly. However, a cookie lacks the gooey texture that the brownie has, especially if it is left out fro more than a day. From a flavor standpoint, I think that cookies and brownies each offer up their own strengths. Brownies have the fudgy, chocolaty taste, while cookies have a nice balance between dough and chocolate. The final category I will be judging in is storability. Brownies can be in a fridge for as long as your want, and with a quick microwave, can be just as good as when they first came out of the oven. Cookies however, tend to lose all of their moisture after a single day, becoming hard and brittle, even with microwaving. So which one is better? With all things considered, I think that it is safe to say that brownies are superior to cookies, when it comes to taste texture, and storability.

Coding Preparations – 20% Project, Week #1

Hello! My name is Edison, and for my 20% project, I chose to learn how to code. Today, I wanted to lay the foundation for the next six weeks, and download all of the software that I would need to code anything that I wanted. I also started coding my first software I would attempt to complete during this project, which is a software that would schedule the baseball games for the league that my mom helps run. Today was a very productive day, as I was able to complete the downloading process of everything I would need in order to code anything that I want. The software that I am going to use is called Visual Studio Code, and it is a very useful tool for coding in python, as it can allow you to check for any bugs in your code automatically, and it can be run through the terminal, which is a very easy and quick interface automatically installed in every apple computer/laptop. I am so excited about this project, and I can’t wait to code anything I want for the next six weeks.

Dinner With my Friends

There are so many people I would want to invite to dinner, but these are my top three: Kevin, Max, and Bradley. These three people are my best friends, and going to dinner with them would be super fun. For starters, being able to hang out with my friends would already be fun, but going to dinner with them and doing fun things all night with them would be amazing. We would hang out, and have a good time.

Rad Reading – March

This month, I read a book called Skunk Works by Ben R. Rich and Leo Janos. Skunk Works is a nonfiction book about the Skunk Works company, where they design and manufacture airplanes for military use. The book follows the process of designing and testing multiple aircrafts from the view of Ben Rich, the previous owner of the Skunk Works. Some of the airplanes discussed include the F-117A Stealth Fighter, the SR-71 Blackbird, and the U-2 Spy Plane.

This book is for anyone interested in aerospace, nonfiction, or great books. This was one of the best books I have ever read, and its in-depth look into the workings of a major aircraft manufacturer is an amazing insight into how major operations function. From the logistics, the complexity of the aircraft, to the testing one of the fastest planes ever made, its details make it one of the best books ever written.

My favorite character in this book was Ben Rich. He was my favorite character because of his persistence when designing and his ingenuity when it came to aircraft. he never gave up and always worked hard to create the best final product he possibly could. For example, “The most important thing is to stay curious, be innovative, and never settle for mediocrity. This shows his desire to always accomplish a task to the best of his ability, and to “never settle for mediocrity.”

My favorite quote from the book was, “Even the way they financed the operation was highly unconventional: using secret contingency funds, they back-doored payment to Lockheed by writing personal checks to Kelly for more than a million bucks as start-up costs. The checks arrived by regular mail at his Encino home, which had to be the wildest government payout in history.” This quote explains how the government payed the Skunk Works during one of the projects. This quote is my favorite because of the absurdity of the statement. Image a million or more dollars arriving by check in the mail! It just goes to show how amazing some of the things that the people at the Skunk Works did.

The Best Job

If I could have any job in the entire world, it would be as an aerospace engineer. I would love to be an aerospace engineer because of my interest in physics, getting to work on projects with a team, and being able to engineer new things. Being in aerospace would be amazing to me because of my interest in physics. In aerospace, you get to design airplanes, and physics plays a big role in that. Building airplanes is not easy, so usually you get to work in a team of people that share your interests and work with you to complete the airplanes. I love working in groups, so this would be a great opportunity for me. Finally, I love to design things in CAD softwares like Onshape and Solidworks, and being an aerospace engineer would allow me to use these programs in my job every day.

Rad Reading – February

This month, I read a book series called Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone by J. K. Rowling. Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone is a fantasy book about a young boy named Harry Potter who finds out he is a wizard. He then goes to a wizarding school called hogwarts to earn about magic

I loved this book because, because of the action. There was action on eery page, and the end had me on the edge of my seat. Also, the descriptions were so complete and realistic, I could fully immerse myself in the book, and before I knew it, half an hour had gone by already. This book is still one of the best books I’ve ever read.

My favorite character was Harry because of his bravery and loyalty. He would rush into danger to save one of his friends. I know this because in the book, when the troll invaded the school, Harry and his friend Ron, “Wheeled around and sprinted back to the door” to save their friend, Hermione.

My favorite line from this book was “It takes a great deal of bravery to stand up to our enemies, but just as much to stand up to our friends.” because it shows how you should always stand up for what you think is right, even if you are standing up to your friend

Being Invisible

The possibilities are endless when you are invisible for twenty-four hours! I could do whatever I wanted! I could go to In-n-out, go to Disneyland, play pranks on my brother, and much, much more. One of the first things I would do to utilize this opportunity to its fullest is to prank my brother. I will sneak up behind him and tap his shoulder, then when he turns around to see who did it, there would be no one there. I would continue doing this many times until my brother thinks he is going insane. Then I would start whispering in his ear and he wouldn’t know what to do! I would want to do this to get back at my brother for being so annoying all of time. The second thing I would do is go to In-n-out and walk in to the employees only area, then I would eat all of the burgers they were making because In-n-out has the best burgers ever. I would then read and sleep until I only had one hour left in my invisibility because when I am invisible, there would be no one combing into my room and annoying me. In the last hour, I would go to Disneyland and walk into he park invisible, then I would go into the bathroom right when my time is up, reappear, then enjoy Disneyland until the end of the day. Being invisible would be great, and I would be able to do so many things that I normally wouldn’t be able to do.
